Consultation

CAPS staff members provide consultation with students, staff, faculty, family members, and friends about a range of issues, including:

  • strategies for helping a student connect with CAPS or other support services
  • concerns about a particular student who might be experiencing emotional distress or struggling with mental health problems
  • concerns about the impact of an individual's distressing behaviors on others
  • crisis intervention, management, and response
  • impact of bias-related incidents, other harassing or threatening behaviors, or violence on students
  • student referrals to community mental health providers and services
  • opportunities for training on mental health issues and strategies for helping students

If your need is urgent, please tell us when you call. We will help you right away.

Please understand that all information about our clients is completely confidential (even the fact that they are clients). However, we may still be able to provide general information about how to understand, provide assistance, or get help for the person or situation you describe. And confidentiality does not limit what you can tell us.

During certain times of year, the clinical demands of our students must take precedence over training and educational programs. If we cannot help by providing those services at the time you call, we will help you consider other options.

When the problem is more complex than the individual

CAPS provides student-centered consultation for student service staff and faculty and offers guidance in the management of complex or difficult cases. CAPS' Community Consultation and Intervention (CCI) counselors will meet on an as needed basis to assist staff and faculty in supporting a student in distress. Through these consultations, we are often able to work with campus partners to find ways to streamline and strengthen campus systems for identifying and assisting students in distress.
