Parents and Guardians

Supporting your son or daughter during the more difficult times of his or her university career at Cornell can be stressful. We are your partner in helping your student succeed. It's important that you not neglect your own feelings when helping your student cope with life's challenges. Taking care of yourself will help everyone in your family to cope. This website has an extensive section of resources for parents and guardians, designed to assist you during challenging times.

Confidentiality at CAPS

If your student receives services at CAPS, it is important for you to understand that confidentiality is crucial to the process. (View Gannett's confidentiality statement.) We cannot provide any information to you about their treatment, except in emergent situations where we are concerned for their safety. If you have information about your student you think would be helpful and wish to share it with us, we would welcome communication from you. However, as prescribed by mental health law we cannot talk about your student, even to confirm that your son or daughter is receiving services at CAPS. If your student agrees that it would be helpful to for you to have a more open conversation with his/her CAPS counselor, we can talk with you if we have written permission from your student. Your student can complete this form, Authorization for Disclosing, Obtaining, or Discussing Patient Health Information (pdf), and fax it to CAPS at 607 254-5244.
