Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Initiatives

Cornell University applies an environmental management approach to the prevention of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) abuse. Faculty, staff, students, and members of the Ithaca community, working under the auspices of the President’s Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs have developed prevention strategies that impact everything from community relations to the social scene at Cornell.

Cornell AOD survey data

Cornell uses the national Core Alcohol and Drug Survey to collect data related to the use of alcohol and other drugs by Cornell University students.

The report from 2000, 2003, and 2005 (pdf) includes:

  • use of substances in past 30 days
  • frequency of alcohol use in the last year
  • number of drinks per sitting
  • experience of negative consequences due to alcohol or drug use in past year
  • experience of second-hand effects due to other students drinking in or around campus
  • comparison of Cornell's findings to a national sample
