The Harrison M. Trice Award for Best Undergraduate Papers on Alcohol and Other Drug Use and Abuse and Campus Life are awarded at the end of the spring semester annually by The R. Brinkley Smithers Institute for Alcohol-Related Workplace Studies of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
The two undergraduate prizes are for the best research papers on alcohol and other drugs and campus life. First prize is an award of $1,000; second prize is an award of $500. The competition is open to all undergraduate students on the Cornell University campus. Papers may be either single- or multiple-authored and may relate to any academic subject. However, the research should relate to alcohol and other drugs and campus life.
The paper must be written during the academic year in which it is submitted. There is no length requirement. The term "research" is used broadly to define a paper that collects, analyses, and discusses some form of "data" on the subject of alcohol and/or other drugs. Data may be drawn from the library, archives, interviews, observations, experiments, and surveys. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are appropriate. Research from any academic discipline is encouraged and the methods employed should be appropriate to the subject matter. The research paper may be any paper written during the academic year to satisfy a course requirement, an honor thesis, or independent study.
In judging the winners of the awards, the following criteria are used:
