Common Mental Health Conditions in College Students

In this section, we hope to synthesize information about the mental health conditions most pertinent to college students. The web is filled with sites that speak to one mental health condition or another. We have chosen to link to the "Student Counseling Virtual Pamphlet Collection" provided by the University of Chicago, as it is a collection of brochures on a wide range of mental health topics, produced by college health centers around the United States. The list includes, but is not limited to, information on:

  • Suicide (Note: In the Virtual Pamphlet Collection, materials about suicide are listed under "depression.")
  • Anxiety
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Trauma (physical or sexual assault; disaster)/ PTSD
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Substance abuse
  • Attention Deficit Disorder or other learning disabilities
  • Eating disorders (see also Cornell-related information provided by the Cornell Healthy Eating Program)

Another terrific source of information is MTV-U's "Half of Us" website. The site is an educational resource designed to illuminate and destigmatize mental health concerns among college students.
