We have developed a range of services specially designed to address the wide variety of questions, concerns, and problems Cornell students have in dealing with the role of alcohol and other drugs in their own lives, in the the lives of others close to them, and in the Cornell community. Not sure if you have a problem? Try an on-line alcohol self-assessment.
BASICS is a two-session assessment and feedback process that allows students to evaluate for themselves their alcohol or other drug use and to explore the extent to which it may a problem in their lives. Sessions are provided by members of our staff, usually from Gannett Health Promotion or CAPS. To schedule a BASICS appointment, call 607 255-4782.
Changing any behavior is hard to do, and talking with a counselor at Gannett can help you develop strategies for reducing or abstaining from alcohol or other drugs. A counselor can help you address any underlying problems (for example, family issues, depression, or anxiety) that may be contributing to your use of alcohol or other drugs. To learn more about individual counseling at Gannett, including how to schedule an appointment, contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).
In these four-session groups, students discuss with others the potential effects of alcohol and other drug use on academics, relationships, health, and future plans. These groups emphasize a harm-reduction approach, promoting responsible and educated decision-making around alcohol and other drug use. Groups are held several times a semester. To sign up for a group, please contact Counseling and Psychological Services: 607 255-5208.
Explorations Groups provide a safe, confidential space for students to discuss changes they are thinking about or are working on with regards to their use of alcohol and other drugs. Students find that attending these groups, sometimes in combination with individual counseling, improves their success at achieving the changes they desire. In these groups, students strategize how to drink less or not drink at all, as well as support one another in a larger campus environment where heavy drinking is commonplace. These groups run all semester, and students are welcome to drop-in without a formal screening process. Please contact Counseling and Psychological Services (607 255-5208) to learn the time and location of these groups.
