Types of Emergencies

An emergency is any situation that requires an immediate police, fire, or medical response to preserve life or property. These include a serious injury or illness (e.g., loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, severe pain or bleeding), a fire, a chemical spill, a drowning, a fight, an assault or immediate danger of assault, a crime in progress, a situation involving weapons, a suicide attempt, etc.

If you are uncertain whether a situation is an emergency or requires an ambulance or other medical intervention, do not hesitate to call the Cornell University Police at 911 or 255-1111. In a non-emergent situation, Gannett’s health care provider or counselor on-call can advise you about whether, when, and where to seek assistance.

We hope this information (see list to the left) will help guide you about what to do in specific kinds of emergencies. If you still have questions, please give us a call at 255-5155.
