Support for your emotional health
Many international students have told us that the stress of adjusting to a new culture while juggling a demanding academic schedule can leave a person feeling emotionally depleted. It's not uncommon to feel stressed out, overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed. Speaking confidentially with a counselor at Gannett's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) can help you gain insight into your situation, develop solutions, and learn about valuable resources.
It's a common misperception that seeking counseling means there is something wrong with you or that you are "crazy." Over 12% of Cornell students visit CAPS each year for a variety of problems, and most find it very helpful. Coming to CAPS only means you have the courage to seek help.
Talking with a professional about your concerns can seem uncomfortable or unfamiliar at first, especially if you come from a culture in which problems are usually worked out with the help of family members, spouses, friends, or others. Counselors can provide additional support by offering an objective perspective in a confidential setting.
Making the first appointment may feel hard, but we make the process as simple as possible. The first step is to call 607 255-5155 to schedule a confidential phone screening. This 10-15 minute telephone conversation provides an opportunity for a brief assessment of your concerns and the most appropriate resources for helping you--an in person appointment at CAPS or something else.
Some students prefer to speak first with a counselor during confidential walk-in hours at off-site locations.
If you feel your situation is urgent, do not delay calling 607 255-5155 to consult by phone with thecounselor on call.
Is a health concern is an emergency?
It is not always obvious whether a health concern needs attention by a medical professional or can be managed, with a little advice, at home.
If your health concern is not life-threatening and in need of immediate care, you can call Gannett at 255-5155. Gannett’s on-call staff is available for phone consultation 24-hours a day, seven days a week to discuss your health concern. They can advise you about whether you need medical care and where to get it.
If you need prompt care when Gannett is closed, you can receive medical services from Cayuga Medical Center (Ithaca's hospital) or the Convenient Care Center (ambulatory care center). Gannett's on-call provider can help you arrange transportation.
Ambulance: Call 911 if you are having a health emergency. The dispatcher will send an ambulance and police to provide immediate assistance. Charges for taking an ambulance to the hospital in an emergency usually are covered by health insurance.
If your health problem is not an emergency, transportation by ambulance may not be covered and is quite expensive. Taxis and buses are available.
