We know you agree it's important that students feel no hesitation to ask for help. Over many years of working with students, we have found that assurance of confidentiality is vital to them. Students over 18 have the legal right to receive confidential health care.
Gannett provides confidential physical and mental health services in accordance with state and federal law and professional standards. In non-life threatening situations (e.g., illness, injury, mental health concern), we must have the student's permission to disclose information (even about medical bills) to family members.
We do encourage patients to involve parents, and in emergency situations, will make that contact ourselves.
Open communication with your student about her/his health, safety, and medical and/or psychological treatment is something you need to work out together. Talk about your desire to respect your student's independence and provide loving and tangible support when its needed. Strategize together about how s/he can seek your support in a difficult time without worrying about upsetting or alienating you.
