If you suspect that you or someone you know has a problem with alcohol or other drugs, don't be afraid to reach out for help. Many organizations at Cornell and in the Ithaca area can provide assistance.

Education, information, and referral

Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students  (BASICS)
A service for students to explore their alcohol and drug use.

Cornell's Alcohol and Other Drugs Portal
This is Cornell University's portal to information and services related to alcohol and other drugs (AOD).

Employee Assistance Program (EAP
Provides training programs for supervisors and employees on alcohol and other drugs; 255-1531.

Empathy, Assistance, and Referral Service (EARS) 
Provides confidential peer (student) counseling by phone and walk-in consultation. 211 Willard Straight Hall; 255-EARS (255-3277).

Health Promotion
Provides program planning and consultation; in-service training on alcohol and other drugs for student leaders, faculty, and staff; special events programming; and a resource library containing literature, videos, posters, and educational pamphlet, Gannett, Level 3; 255-4782.

Medical Amnesty
This protocol is part of Cornell's comprehensive approach to reducing the harmful consequences caused by the consumption of alcohol.

President's Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs 
The complex nature of AOD-related problems and the impact they have on institutions of higher education require comprehensive, integrated and sustained strategies.

 

Medical services

Gannett Health Services 
Provides general medical services, including screening for alcohol or other drug-related symptoms or illness and referral for treatment to other health-care providers both within Gannett and in the Ithaca area. Gannett, 255-5155.

 

Counseling

Counseling & Psychological Service (CAPS)
Provides consultation and/or assessment for individuals concerned about their own or someone else’s alcohol or other drug use. Confidential, individual and group counseling for Cornell students only. Support groups are offered throughout the year. Gannett, Level 1; 255-5208.

Cornell United Religious Work (CURW)
Confidential, individual counseling by representatives from a wide range of religious faiths. Anabel Taylor Hall; 255-4214;

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) 
Provides confidential, short-term counseling for Cornell retirees, faculty, staff, and their dependents. Also provides consultation, assessment, and referral when needed for individuals concerned about their own or someone else’s alcohol or other drug use; 255-1531.

Self-help groups
Alcoholics Anonymous 
A support group for men and women who want to stop drinking. Members share experiences, strength, and hope. No fees; meetings are anonymous. Daily open meetings are held on campus. A list of meetings and locations is available from Gannett Health Promotion; 255-4782. Other 12-step groups meet in the ITHACA community. For more information: 273-1541.

Al-Anon
A support group for friends, relatives or family members whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking. No fees; meetings are anonymous. Open meetings are held in the Ithaca area. Narcotics Anonymous
A support group for people who want to break the cycle of drug abuse. For information about meeting times, call 387-8292 or the regional phone line 774-4907 or check listings in local newspapers.

Alcohol & Drug Council of Tompkins County
Confidential individual and group counseling and education. Fees on a sliding scale (some may be covered by insurance). 201 East Green Street; 274-6288.

Cayuga Addiction Recovery Services
Provides individual and group counseling for persons experiencing drug-related problems and for those who live or work with these individuals. 102 East State Street; 273-5500.
