Many of us grew up learning the expression, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." However, according to the US Apple Association, even as far back as the medieval times, an old English saying "Ate an apfel avore gwain to bed makes the doctor beg his bread," alluded to the health benefits of apples.
Current research seems to echo the alleged health benefits of this fruit. Certainly apples are among the many fruits and vegetables known to be loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. And, when combined with other fresh fruits and vegetables, apples can be easily incorporated into the "5 A Day" plan, advocated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This plan is designed to encourage individuals to eat 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
If you have questions about incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your meal plan, you may wish to consult with the Cornell Health Eating Program (CHEP) at Gannett.
For a collection of unscientific, but rather "fun facts" about the history, folklore, of apples you may wish to visit Health & Beyond.
And to learn about Cornell's own orchard, a working orchard located right here on campus, visit the Cornell Orchard website. Even better, visit the Cornell Orchard Sales Room where you can sample a wide array of apple varieties and what many consider the best cider anywhere!
