Syphilis and HIV Testing at Gannett

If you believe you may have been exposed to syphilis and/or HIV, we hope you will consider testing. Below is an overview of the convenient testing procedure at Gannett.

Making an appointment

Call 255-5155 to make an appointment for confidential syphilis and/or HIV testing. This appointment will involve a conversation and a blood draw. No physical exam is included.*

Appointments for such testing can be made:

    • Monday–Thursday 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
    • Friday 8:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

Note: The NYS Health Department is no longer providing free HIV and syphilis testing at Gannett. If the cost of testing is a barrier to care, please talk with a provider at Gannett or Gannett's Patient Advocate about your concerns.

*If you want to be tested for additional infections, you may need a physical exam. If you have symptoms, be sure to let us know when you call to make your appointment so that you can be scheduled without delay. If you do not have symptoms, please read our STI testing sheet for more information about what such testing involves.

During your visit

Check in on the appropriate floor of Gannett. (You will be told where to go when you schedule the visit.) You will meet with a health care provider (nurse, Clinical Counselor, clinician) who will review your risk factors and test options. This is a good time to ask any questions you may have about exposure, testing, treatment or other related concerns. Depending on the tests selected you may need to make a return appointment for results.

Your blood sample can be collected by one of Gannett's laboratory technicians, located on Level 2. If you are testing for both syphilis and HIV, only one blood draw is necessary.

While you wait for results

Take care of yourself during the waiting period. If you find you are anxious, consider talking with a trusted friend or another support person. Practice stress management practices. If you are currently sexually active, consider refraining from sexual activity while you wait for results. If you cannot, be sure to practice safer sex to decrease the possibility of transmission to a partner.

Getting results

HIV test results must be given in person (according to NYS law), although syphilis test results can be obtained by phone. If you were tested for HIV, you will need make an appointment to get your results.

Whether you receive your results by phone or in person, your provider may offer clinical advice, recommendations for treatment and/or prevention.
