Gannett acknowledges that for many people, "thriving" means maintaining more than good health and academic/job performance. In fact, those seeking overall wellness or holistic health may feel the need to embrace their spiritual health (spirituality) too.
While the links between one's spiritual practice and medical health are actively debatated in the literature, several studies demonstrate that regular spiritual practice relieves stress for some people. Activities such as prayer, meditation, and yoga can help to lower one's heartrate, increase oxygen flow, and promote a general relaxation response, all of which have proven health benefits.
There are countless paths to nurturing one's spirit. Some involve distinct religious practice, and others more secular practices designed to increase our sense of inner awareness and connectedness.
Members of the Cornell community interesting in continuing (or developing) a spiritual practice may wish to participate in one or more of the practices offered by either the Cornell United Religious Work, or the Cornell Wellness Program.
