Gannett is the primary care provider of medical and mental health services for all enrolled students and provides a range of services for faculty, staff and dependents of students (spouses, partners, and children over the age of 14). See information about who can use Gannett to know which of our services you may be eligible to use. We also provide some speciality medical services (such as physical therapy, massage therapy, travel services and allergy shots).

When the physical or mental health needs of our patients/clients require services beyond the scope of what we provide at Gannett, we will provide referrals to specialists who have the training, facilities, and technology to provide the best possible care. We also facilitate access to after-hours, urgent or emergency services at Cayuga Medical Center. We are also happy to refer those whose personal preference is to receive primary care medical and counseling services off campus. (SHIP members: see below.)

If you have questions about referrals or believe you might need specialty care, please talk with a member of our medical or counseling staff.

Student Health Insurance Plan members

For students and dependents (over the age of 14) enrolled in Cornell’s Student Health Insurance Plan, Gannett is your primary-care provider: whenever you need health care (except in an emergency), you must begin at Gannett to receive the maximum benefit for services.

If your care cannot be provided at Gannett, your primary care provider may refer you to an in-network provider. (To receive the maximum benefit for services covered by the SHIP, you must have a written referral to an in-network provider.)

If you have just joined the SHIP and are receiving care for a medical condition, you must call Gannett to establish a relationship with a primary care physician. If necessary, s/he will provide a referral to an in-network provider for specialty care.

For those students who have been continuously enrolled in the SHIP and are receiving care from an in-network specialist, a new referral is required each plan year in order or ongoing treatment to be covered. Talk with your primary care provider.

The Cornell Office of Student Health Insurance has more specific information about the referral process. If you need a referral or referral renewal, please make sure you look at the current information provided in the SHIP member's guide.
