Welcome to CAPS

University life can generate academic, emotional, and social concerns. Everyone experiences them; but at times these concerns can make it difficult to function. It is a sign of intelligence and strength to recognize when you may need help. It is also the first step in solving any difficulty.

CAPS is a safe place to talk with someone privately about any concern. This may include stress, loneliness, anxiety, depression, adjustment challenges, relationship difficulties, questions about identity, managing an existing mental health condition, or other issues. Nearly 3,500 used CAPS services last year.

CAPS staff members provide a safe, confidential atmosphere where, together, we can consider your current situation in the context of your personal history and life experiences. You can come to see yourself, your relationships, and the world in a different way.

In these pages, you will find a wealth of information about who we are, how we work, and the services we offer. We also provide many resources you can use to help yourself and others.

Our mission

The mission of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is to provide crisis intervention, brief counseling, outpatient psychiatric care, outreach, and referral services to Cornell University students. We also offer consultation, education, and prevention strategies to the University community. We seek to encourage an environment of inclusion and personal development.

The multicultural staff at CAPS recognizes that many factors —  including age, physical abilities and cognitive talents, socioeconomic status, political viewpoints, religious/spiritual and/or philosophical beliefs, and sexual, gender, racial/ethnic identities, and other unique characteristics —  are salient in students' lives. It is our commitment to welcome all people with respect and sensitivity.

CAPS values students in all their individuality. We provide a supportive environment in which identity issues can be discussed.

Gannett participates in Towards New Destinations, Cornell's diversity planning initiative, and Safer People/Safer Places network that seeks to create a safer and more inclusive environment for all members of the campus community by reducing heterosexism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and queerphobia.
