Life is full of social situations and personal challenges that can affect your quality of life while at Cornell. The professional staff at Gannett Health Promotion works with broad networks of students, staff, and faculty to help create campus environments that support student health, well-being, and personal and academic success. We provide health information, training, and consultation for individuals, student organizations, and Cornell classes and departments.

Mission

The mission of Gannett Health Promotion is to "foster optimal academic functioning and social development through services and strategies that enhance multiple dimensions of individual health and cultivate an environment supportive of life-long healthy behaviors."

Our staff puts this mission into motion by:

  • Advocating within student communities, Cornell departments, and University administration for policy and structural changes that will support the health and well-being of the campus community. Gannett Health Promotion plays an important role in a variety of collaborative campus health initiatives, including the President's Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs, Medical Amnesty Protocol, Council on Mental Health and Welfare.
  • Engaging actively with student leaders and providing students with opportunities for health activism and leadership development. Health Promotion staff members rely on close working alliances with student government representatives, residential student staff, fraternity and sorority leaders, the Student Health Alliance at Cornell, and many other student organizations.
  • Addressing the pressing prevention needs of Cornell students and student communities. To understand more about those needs and our efforts, see especially health topics and concerns on this web site.
  • Providing training and information for staff and faculty in order to increase support to students in need of help. Providing education and technical assistance to enhance the ability of Cornell faculty and staff to participate in prevention and intervention activities in support of student health is one of our primary tasks.
  • Reaching out to communities on campus that may have unique interests and needs and/or face particular challenges related to health and access to services. We work closely with other Gannett staff members and campus partners to understand needs and priorities, and improve access to health information and health care for student communities (including, but not limited to, international students, students of color, LGBT students, and athletes).
  • Maintaining ongoing, collaborative relationships within the Cornell and Ithaca community. We cannot do our work without close partnerships with our colleagues at Gannett, academic and student services departments at Cornell, and individuals and organizations in Ithaca. Meet our partners.
  • Creating and distributing health information on all of Gannett's services and a wide range of health and wellness topics. We are pleased to bring you Gannett's web site, as well as a broad array of other communication vehicles, including health@cornell.edu (an electronic newsletter), Family Matters (a newsletter for parents and guardians of first year undergrads), G-Whiz (a bathroom reader in campus residence halls), and many media and print materials.
  • Offering confidential individual consultation and referral on a wide range of health topics. The BASICS alcohol assessment program and Cornell's Victim Advocacy Program  are brought to you by Health Promotion staff members.
  • Conducting regular assessments of campus health trends and client/patient satisfaction. We believe that the effectiveness of our programs and materials depends on understanding the current health concerns, experiences, perceptions, and needs of our students. To this end, we stay abreast of national trends and strategies to gain a broad understanding of college health issues and use focus groups, individual interviews, and surveys to gather particular information about Cornell undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.

Health Promotion staff members are committed to providing relevant services and information to the population(s) we serve. In addition to our extensive collection of brochures and handouts (see Health A-Z to peruse part of this collection), we maintain collections of  posters, brochures, and fact sheets (widely utilized by residential student staff). Stop by Health Promotion (Level 3) to review our selection.

  • Brochures: Gannett has created a number of brochures specifically for members of the Cornell community. This collection includes information on disease prevention, illness management, and Gannett services. Many other brochures, created by local organizations and national vendors, augment the collection. Stop by Gannett anytime and feel free to puruse our pamphlet racks. If you need assistance finding materials on a specific topic, please talk with one of our staff.

  • Posters: Whether you're a student looking to enhance your residence, or an RA in need of ideas for a quick passive programming project, you will find a poster on your health topic of interest. Dozens of posters are available in our collection, and copies are offered free of charge.
