Intrauterine Device (IUD)

The IUD is a small plastic or metal birth control device placed into a woman's uterus by a health care provider. It can remain there for several years. The IUD prevents pregnancy by changing the physical environment of the reproductive tract. These changes appear to prevent an egg from being fertilized.

The two types of IUD available through Gannett are the non-hormonal Paraguard Copper T that can stay in the uterus for up to 10 years and the progesterone-releasing Mirena which can stay in place for 5 years.

Like any method, there are risks and benefits associated with using an IUD.

The benefits of an IUD:

  • It is considered an extremely effective method of preventing pregnancy.
  • It is easy to use; once placed, an IUD is effecive for 5-10 years, depending on the type inserted.
  • There is no need to remember pills, patches, rings, etc.
  • Fertility returns immediately upon removal of the IUD.

Some of the disadvantages are:

  • Increased menstrual bleeding and cramps
  • Potential for unnoticed accidental expulsion of the IUD which may result in unexpected pregnancy
  • Potential for persistent pelvic pain
  • No protection against sexually transmissible infections

Gannett requires three visits to get an IUD:

  • A consult visit to learn about the IUD
  • A medical visit during which the IUD is inserted
  • A post-insertion visit to check the position of the IUD

If you think the IUD may be right for you, call 255-5155 to make an appointment to discuss it with one of Gannett's health care providers.
