Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Testing

Some people have a sexually transmitted infection but do not know it. Others have symptoms of infection but don’t know what to do. And others may be concerned about their exposure by learning that a sexual partner may also have an infection. STIs can be transmitted from person to person even if symptoms are not present. Fortunately, tests are now available to diagnose many STIs (but not all) even if there are no symptoms. Symptoms may vary from person to person or may not be present at all.

If you don't have symptoms but are considering testing:

Please review the information on our STI fact sheet to determine what testing is appropriate for you (and/or a partner) at this time. Our nurses and clinicians can help you make decisions based on your personal history.

If you have any of these symptoms, talk with a clinician:

  • Painful urination
  • Unusual discharge form the vagina, penis or anus
  • Skin changes (bumps, sores, rashes, lesions or warts) in or around the genitals, anus or throat
  • Genital/anal itching or pain
  • Pelvic discomfort or pain, or an abnormal PAP smear (for women)
  • Testicular pain

Because STIs can be bacterial, viral, fungal, etc., there is not one inclusive test for them. Each STI is different and requires its own specific test and assessment. Each test costs a different amount. Depending on your gender, symptoms (or not) and sexual history, a clinician may:

  • Ask detailed questions about sexual activity
  • Conduct a physical assessment
  • Take a urine sample
  • Do an oral, vaginal, penile or rectal swab
  • Take a blood sample
