Commitment to Inclusiveness

Gannett is committed to providing quality care to all members of the Cornell community who rely on our service. We recognize that race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, culture and socio-economic status may affect the health of an individual and/or influence an individual's healthcare choices. With that in mind, Gannett strives to be sensitive to the diverse needs at Cornell. Our commitment is to treat patients with respect, compassion, and sensitivity.

An integral part of that commitment is the on-going effort to promote health initiatives that enhance and improve Gannett's services to the diverse population we serve. We do this in a variety of ways:

  • staff training that provides medical and mental health information to staff so they can provide the most comprehensive and population-sensitive care possible.
  • partnership with other departments on campus, such as the International Students and Scholars Office, Office of Minority Educational Affairs, COSEP advisors, Cornell United Religious Work, and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center, so there is consistent communication, training and outreach regarding specific healthcare needs.
  • participation on numerous campus committees, such as the Diversity Council, the Asian/Asian American Task Force, and Cornell International Educators Network, which ensures awareness of campus initiatives and policies relevant to the diverse populations on campus.
  • co-sponsorship of Cornell's Safe Place initiative.
  • focus groups with many populations (such as students of color and international students) to help identify environmental and service barriers with the goal of making Gannett a more welcoming place to all.
  • outreach counseling and support services designed to assist communities who may not access traditional support services.
  • "We Care" survey (conducted 4 times a year) that provides feedback from patients and clients regarding care received at Gannett.
  • Patient Advocacy program where patients, clients, or other users of Gannett can find aid regarding questions, needs, concerns, or problems.
  • special "language line" to offer interpretation in over 170 languages to assist patients and clients in understanding health care issues.
  • services for people affected (directly or indirectly) by bias-related incidents.
  • public statement on Patient/Client Rights and Responsibilities regarding healthcare at Gannett.
  • on-going efforts to attract a diverse pool of qualified candidates for every open position at Gannett.

We welcome your concerns, questions, or suggestions regarding Gannett's commitment to inclusiveness. Please contact us by phone (255-3564) or e-mail

"As a campus and as a society, we must find avenues to encourage all of us to learn to engage cultures and people who differ from us. Cornell has been pursuing these avenues through efforts that include A Tapestry of Possibilities, University Diversity Council public forums and, of course, our curriculum."
